Bath Time for Bonzo!: Pet Bathing Tips

Some of our four legged friends seem to hate baths. Dogs either love or hate water. If your four legged friend falls into the latter then bathing him/her can become a dreaded chore. Some dogs generally just hate water and some dogs think they are about to be drowned, but most dogs hate the bathing process because of the water in their ears and most shampoos or soaps burn their eyes. Placing some type of water resistant or absorbent material in the ears can alleviate the ear issue. Try using cotton balls in their ears to keep the water out. The burning sensation in the eyes can be caused by several factors, but the most likely case is that most shampoos and soaps are strong alkaline. Without getting into a full blown chemistry lesson, alkalinity is anything having a pH of greater than 7. Most people understand that acids burn, but alkaline burns occur more frequently and are generally more severe than acid burns. These burns in the eyes destroy the cell structure not only of the epithelium but also of the stroma and endothelium. Even though acids produce an initial burn and quickly stop, alkaline may continue to breech the cornea long after the initial burn. At this point an acid can be used to neutralize the burn and balance the pH. Try using a little vinegar, which is a very mild acid, and water on a cotton ball. Then use the cotton ball to wipe dry the eyes, "neutralizing" the stinging effect. The dog may not like it, but it should get well regardless. The best solution to this issue is to use an appropriate animal shampoo. From personal experience, a natural sudsy shampoo that work is yucca root based pet shampoo like BioLux Internationals yucca shampoo. For more plethora of information, see ,Pet Grooming Supplies or call your veterinarian..
Now, here are a few tips which make bathing your pet more pleasurable. Start a routine and keep the routine from the first bath If the animal knows what to expect, they will be less resistant. If you have room or access, use a stationary tub. Have a line in the bottom of the tub, like the one BioLux carries < a href="http://www.bioluxinternational.com/ ">Dog Kennel Floors, so your pet will not slide around and will be more stable. Organize supplies so you have everything you need within reach. This will avoid the pet jumping out of the tub. Place the pet in the bathing area, on a leash, prior to bathing and reward him/her with a treat. Associate grooming with a good time, which will assist in coaxing a reluctant pet into the water. Talk to the pet while bathing. This will allow the pet to focus on you and not the bathing process. Rinse them with luke warm water. Dry them off, but be prepared for a shower yourself!! Before releasing them, provide a finishing treat. Before beginning any regiment consult your veterinarian.

Be mindful of your dogs paws.

Planning on putting up an outside kennel/run. Should you use concrete? Is there other materials that one could use for flooring without using cement? And what are the pros and cons? Should the kennel floor be raised ; an angle, or flat? This article address many of the questions raised about planning a kennel run and the optimal flooring to use That is a very good question. Placing your dog kennel on a floor that isn't suitable will only cause bigger problems. First, choosing a site for your new dog kennel is the most important step. A level area that has shade and partial barrier against the elements are minimum factors to consider. Next, the dog kennel floor is very important to the comfort, health and happiness of your dog not to mention the effects that it will have on you and the way it could look and smell if you do not put the proper work into it in the beginning. There are several different materials you can use for dog kennel floor. Two of the most universal surfaces are cement or raised rack flooring. While cement is one of the floors to use, it is not the most comfortable surface, does not displace temperature to regulate the body temperature, and depending on the type of weather you live in and the breed of dog you have it is sometimes not recommended to use because of it’s adverse effect on the animals paw pads, bone problems, and skin.
For this article I will refer to BioLux's kennel flooring. Raised flooring has high resistance to the deteriorating effect of sunlight and resists the build up of germs and bacteria, which can be harmful to your pet. The design allows for easy installation, time saving ease of cleaning and has no corners to trap odor causing bacteria. Any residue that remains can easily be removed with water. They dry quickly when cleaned. They absorb NO moisture or odors, treated with an agent to resist bacterial and fungal growth, and allow excellent air circulation. This in turn allows animals to better regulate body temperatures and comfort. For more plethora of information, see ,Dog Kennel Floor
Before releasing them, provide a finishing treat. Before beginning any regiment consult your veterinarian.

Brrrr, It's Nice and Warm!

Different season post specific issues with our four legged friend and dogs are no different. As humans we notice each others skin becoming chapped and soar. The air in outside and in houses becomes arid during the fall and winter So, just as our skin becomes chapped the parched atmosphere drains moisture from a dogs skin and hair. There are several steps to not only alleviate this issue, but also keep your canine comfortable for those cold dry months. .So, to alleviate this is Make a time or even a schedule to brush your dog heartily. The type of brush to use will depend on the length of you dogs hair. This has several benefits such as releasing their own natural oils, decreases the chance of matting, improves the circulation on close to their dermis, and provides them with a little special time they will grow to appreciate. Next, try providing your dog with Next; consider providing your dog with suppliant of O-mega 3 or some other fatty acid and vitamin E. Some, premium dog food contain natural, wholesome supplement nutrients including fish oil (omega fatty acids) and vitamin E. ** Before providing your dog with any supplement, always consult your veterinarian. **. If you are reading this article and it has been cold a bit and your dog has matted fur, etc... It is not too late to make a come back. Do not shave the animal. Even a sweater is not like natural fur. Start by washing your find thoroughly with a high grade shampoo, like Medicated Sulfur Shampoo from BioLux International. This is a PH balanced, all natural and biodegradable shampoo. Formulated with colloidal sulfur that remains on the coat and skin to speed healing and relieve itchy, dry, or flaky skin. Ensure you completely dry the dog. Do not try the wash dry brush and repeat method to lessen matting as this will deplete the dogs natural oils. Moderation here is the key. The environment is in constant change; but just remember, the condition of your best friends hair mirrors the general state of their health.
Best wishes and Happy Holidays.

Choosing a crate size.

Crates vary like peoples opinions, but there are certain criteria to look for when chosen a crate. A crate need only be big enough for the dog to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. I like them to be just long enough for my dogs to stretch out on their sides to sleep. Growing puppies can be a problem when buying a crate. Not everyone can afford to buy a new one for each stage of growth but too large a crate can make a puppy harder to housebreak. Fortunately, dividers are available for some brands so you can shrink and expand the puppy's space as needed.
Choosing the proper size dog crate for your dog should involve a number of considerations. Depending on the gender and the possibility of mixed ancestry, your dog may need a dog crate that is larger or smaller than listed. This list is provided to help you choose the proper size dog crate for your adult dog. Please consult your pet professional for additional guidance.
24" dog crates are recommended for the following breeds or dogs weighing up to 25 lbs
30" dog crates are recommended for the following breeds or dogs weighing between 26 - 40 lbs
36" dog crates are recommended for the following breeds or dogs weighing between 41 - 70 lbs
42" dog crates are recommended for the following breeds or dogs weighing between 71 - 90 lbs
48" dog crates are recommended for the following breeds or dogs weighing between 91 - 110 lbs
54" dog crates are recommended for the following breeds or dogs weighing over 110 lbs

Don’t Outlaw the Care of the Paw

Yes, my titles are always a bit corny. However, if they get a pet owners attention and provides the quality pet care; oh well then have a laugh on me. I try to vary my topics and this is no exception. A pets paws, just as your feet, are important to have daily habit grooming and maintenance. Grooming a dogs paws important, even though grooming a dogs paw are sensitive, and they usually do not like them getting touched, these daily grooming habits are much easier the earlier you put them into your routine. The basic inspection only takes about five minutes; possibly saving you and you pet a vet visit. 1) Start by a simple inspection of the canines paws to see if any if the nails are broken, chipped, or cracked. 2) Spread the paws to ensure there are not any odds and ends trapped in his paws. 3) While you have the paws spread look for cuts, red areas, or small spots that are infected. 4) Ensure to include nail trimming as part of you dog grooming routine. Overgrown nails are more likely to break, chip, split or snag, putting the canine, feline, or other pet at greater risk. 5) Always check their paws after; swimming, playing, after pet sitting or at a kennel. The animals paws can easily become damaged running on concrete floors, wood floors, or non professional dog kennel flooring. For example the pet kennel flooring BioLux International provides is the best in the industry. Dog Kennel Floors Also, some kennels use harsh cleaners and you should ask for the MSDS. BioLux International provides this information on Pet Kennel Cleaners. If you ever suspect that your dog has stepped on dangerous chemical products, don't allow him to lick himself. If you notice your pet licking their paws, inspect them for ASAP. If you were to find any issues with you pets always your pet veterinarian.

Fleas, fleas, fleas!

These pesky parasites may cause reactions in your pet varying from a mild skin irritation to a severe allergic reaction. Fleas feed on blood; an extreme infestation can cause anemia or even death in animals. All pets are susceptible to flea attacks. You may not even see the fleas on your pet. Scratching, scabs and dark specs, or "flea dirt," found on the skin can all be signs that your pet has become infected with fleas. Taking care of flea infestation takes patience and acting quickly. The life cycle of fleas is about 21 days, so plan on that time span to alleviate the issue. Different flea control products work in different ways, have varying levels of effectiveness, and kill different flea stages (eggs, larvae, and/or adults). You'll need to use a combination of products at the same time to be effective. Dips, shampoos, powders, and sprays will usually kill the adult fleas on your pet. One such shampoo is BioLux's Therapeutic Tar/Aloe Shampoo which has been formulated using a blend of 2% Coat Tar and mild surfactant's. Cools and soothes itchy inflamed areas caused by flea bites, seborrhea, and other non-specific dermatitis.

Also don’t forget to rid your house of fleas by vacuuming and washing your pet's bedding once a week. When using chemical products to control fleas, be very careful. You may be providing too much of a potentially toxic chemical if you use, say, a flea dip and a fogger with the same chemical ingredient. Always check with your veterinarian before beginning your war on fleas.

How Often To Bath A Pet

That is somewhat of a loaded question, because, like humans, every dog has a unique chemistry. So, the answer is broken up into two trains of thought: 1) when the pup develops a not so fresh doggy smell – which can vary from time to time; and 2) the basic routine schedule of a bath time.
The “doggy smell” scenario can vary based on a number of factors such as; time of year, temperature, weather the pooch is a house dog or outside dog; the outside environment, how often the dog is brushed or combed, etc… With these circumstances the bathing amount is subjective to the owners. When the owner notices a smell, the pup gets a bath. This can be a good idea, because the dog usually will have a good amount of oil built up to keep their skin soft and not “flaky”. However, the downside is that the dog could have an overextended period of non-bathing, which could result in matting of the hair. At this point the animal needs to be clipped or a have good de-matting solution applied.
The second practice of a scheduled bath time should not exceed more that once per week. The marvelous coats of today's show dogs are shampooed generally bathed about every week. This endorses the idea that shampooing once per week is sufficient. Most quality grooming pet shampoos and crème rinses have adapted ph levels to ensure that frequent bathing will not dry the animal’s skin excessively. So, if you are going to proceed with the scheduled bathing, always use a dog shampoo or some owners prefer a medicated dog shampoo if their pet has dry or itchy skin. The point here is to use a professional pet groomer product type of shampoo, because applying human shampoos on pets can cause skin problems Also, consult your vet or professional groomer, they can make specific recommendations depending on the length of coat and breed. One last note, make bath time a bonding time for you and your four legged-friend. It’s always a good idea to associate that bathing time with something good such as a treat. This positive reinforcement will make bath time a fun time and you won’t have to battle your way when bathing them. .
Good luck and thanks for asking..

Itchy Does Not Mean Scratchy, Simpson's Humor!

Last week I wrote about cold weather with the dogs’ coat and body heat as the focus. With the massive response with that topic, I decided to address the main question at hand: My dog is scratching like crazy; I know he/she is itching. What do I do? First and foremost, always talk to your vet before starting any type of treatment. Cold weather does cause drier skin, but so can allergies, fleas, or other parasites. I am speaking directly to the itching that is a result of dry skin because of cold weather. There are several options lets talk about the extreme and then take a step back.
If the dog is scratching and gnawing at their coat and skin, they can dig deep enough to cause cuts or abrasions and these opening in the skin may get infected and take on a whole new set of issues with the dog’s health and wellbeing. If you are at this point do not waste time; go to the vet and get some antibiotics for the animal. While you are there, the vet may inform you of some medication that you can obtain from him/her, such as cortisone or antihistamines that may alleviate the itching. This type of treatment may be effective. However, it may have side effect as well. The side effects may include, but not limited to: weight gain, drowsiness, lack of attention, or hyperactivity.
With the worst case scenario out of the way, lets talk about preventive home treatments such as diet and supplements. Without proper nourishment this dog’s entire body, not just its skin, will be continuously in a state of unbalance. A high quality dog food will generally contain the necessary protein, vitamins and amino acids a dog needs. With a balanced diet a dog’s skin will generally produce enough oil to prevent dry skin, but supplements such as Omega Fatty Acids and possibly some spare steak trimmings, "fat", will have positive benefits. Now, let’s continue down the road of prevention by addressing grooming habits. A daily brushing will assist in this area and provide you and your pet with quality time and well worth the effort. Next, using an oatmeal shampoo, like BioLux's Oatmeal (Sensitive) Shampoo might help to control itching. A second type of shampoo, BioLux's medicated dog shampoo formulated with colloidal sulfur that remains on the coat and skin to speed healing and relieve itchy, dry or flaky skin and hot spots Finally, BioLux Therapeutic Tar/Aloe Shampoo has been formulated using a blend of 2% Coat Tar and mild surfactant's. Cools and soothes itchy inflamed areas. After the shampoo, try following up with a cream rinse or moisturizer. This may help restore some moisture to the skin and reduces itching and you can find multiple types at the following link. pet grooming supplies
These are the methods they use to aid in the prevention of dry skin and the itchiness that causes a dog to scratch and chew at their skin. It may take a couple of weeks to obtain the right combination to alleviate the issue, but if you love animals as I do, it is well worth the effort to see them content and healthy.

Raising a Puppy: Expectations

I think it's important to know what you can realistically expect and not expect from a puppy. Too many people get a puppy with a set of standards already in place and they expect their puppy to fit them perfectly, but you can't do this (well, you can, but you SHOULDN'T). Every puppy is unique, you will never find two the same, so you shouldn't expect them to be the same. Expectations only lead to disappointment and they can even prevent you from loving the dog for what she/he is.
A purebred puppy may NOT fit the standards. Usually the better the breeder, the better the breed standards can be used as guidelines...But remember, they are still just that, guidelines, meant to give you a general description of what an ideal dog of that breed should be like. They don't tell you exactly what your puppy will be like. Even within a breed, puppies are different, they have their own quirks and when they grow up, they may still have their own quirks. This goes for comparing your new puppy to your old dog as well. If you had a wonderful, obedient, mellow, loving lab that recently passed away.....Cherish her memory. You can get another lab puppy, but don't expect your new puppy to be like your old dog.
Expectations should be monitored in training too. The only thing you can expect is that if you are dedicated, you will successfully train that puppy to perform the basic obedience commands and pass the CGC...You can't expect the puppy to be able to do this right at 6 months. You can expect that the puppy will become potty trained....You can't expect the puppy to be potty trained in a week.
You can't expect your puppy to be perfect either. I'm sure we've all seen, at least once in our lives, a young puppy that was as close to perfect as a puppy can get. Didn't nip or mouth, didn't chew every thing, potty trained in a week, loved to learn and picked up commands quickly etc etc. But you can't expect your puppy to be like that, a puppy like that is a very bad model for your expectations. Instead, imagine the worst behaved puppy possible, one that nips, one that takes forever to be housebroken, one that tears things up because that's more realistic. If your puppy isn't that bad, then be happy, be proud, give your puppy a hug and give yourself a pat on the back for doing a good job in training!
So the main point of this is to forget what you expect the puppy to be and what you want the puppy to be. Love the puppy for itself and treat it like it's the first dog you've ever raised (or like you have no clue what breed it is!). Forget your plans of taking that puppy to the nationals in competition, focus on a CGC first, then focus on novice....Just keep training, stay in the present, and go as far as you can.

Stop The Insanity of Puppy Mills!

What is a puppy mill? This is a touchy subject with us here at BioLux International. In fact, I was having lunch with the CEO, Tammy Lanier, and the subject came up. She made no bones about the fact that she is against puppy mills. She was so disgusted that she placed her food down and went on a full scale speech on her feels regarding the subject. So, I’m happy to address this question and write this article. This question deserved a great deal of research.
Wikipedia defines a puppy mill as,” Puppy mills (also known as puppy farms outside of the United States) are large-scale dog breeding facilities that operate under substandard breeding conditions.” (Puppy Mills) Substandard conditions can and should be an understatement. Imagine a high-volume kennel that is dirty, trashy, a bacteria ridden place where dogs are kept in deplorable conditions with no medical care. A non interactive, non-caring basic building with grey block walls, no windows, and cold wet concrete floors where forced breeding is done solely for financial gain A desolate place where protection of the animals is last on the list and the breed’s integrity is constantly being compromised. This puppy farm is a bleak environment where puppies are weaned from their mothers extremely early; so that unethical production breeders are able to sell their "crop" to dog brokers or to pet stores quickly. Let’s step back, because these individuals should not be called "breeders.” They do not deserve the title or recognition of being associated with a breeder or kennel. These people don't care about the dogs or puppies; these so called businesses use and abuse these trapped animals for nothing more than a buck. The previous graphic delineation defines how disgusted I became when researching this topic. If you have the time, perform a search on Google images for “puppy mills” and be prepared to witness the shear misery. Puppies acquired from puppies mills are inclined to have emotional and health problems that not typical with reputable breeders. This is a direct result of substandard breeding conditions. The tiny helpless puppies are raised in a cramped environment. The emotional issues are a direct result of living with many other dogs that have had no interaction, thus become poorly socialized to other dogs, animals, and people; as well as being more prone to have problems with their temperament. Puppies from mills are usually sold as purebred dogs in an attempt to fetch the high. Slow, agonizing death is a common occurrence in these poor environments. If, and that is a big if, a “puppy mill” dog survives early life trauma, they are not out of the woods. These four legged abused orphans are more prone to being diagnosed with respiratory ailments and pneumonia as they grow older. Also, there are congenital or hereditary syndromes, such as hip dysplasia.
. If you are as disgusted as I am, you are probably asking what I can do. You don’t have to picket or go to an extreme to make a difference, but there are a few simple steps you can take to help stop this degradation of animals. Educate yourself and others about puppy mills. When addressing any issue education is a vital step. So, go on the internet and do a search or got to BioLux International, LLC and I’ll have links posted with this article. Add a stop puppy mills banner on your home page or a social network like mySpace or facebook. You can retrieve that image on our home page at BioLux International Pet Supplies. Apply a snowball effect and email a friend a link to this article. Then maybe they email the link, and so on. Donate to HSUS, which is an ongoing campaign to stop puppy mills. Ask a pet store where they get their puppies from and make a choice not to buy a pet from a pet store or online site that are associated with puppy mills. Refusing to buy supplies from any pet store or online pet store that provides products to these puppy mills is a great step. We, as caring animal lovers, need to communicated the unethical code of suppliers, subcontractors, and distributors that interact and turn a blind eye to these “puppy mills” to individuals who are on the outside of the pet world. Here at BioLux International, you can be assured, that will never happen and it is in our firm's core values not to deal with these types of businesses. We have the luxury that these pour souls don’t have; we have a choice! We have the luxury that these pour souls don’t have; a choice! When we purchase a pet or shop at a pet supplies store that supports these businesses, we are contributing to a heartless industry that forces dogs to spend their entire lives in cages constantly breeding to fatten a despicable industry. I understand this article became a bit long, but if it saves a puppy or dog this terrible existence, it was worth the time. I hope this answers your questions regarding “puppy mills.” Pleabe, be proactive, do the right thing by not supporting these businesses.

The Benefits of Rescuing a Pet; In’s and Out’s.

With the New Year on the horizon the thought of rescuing an animal dawns on a lot of people’s minds. For the most part, rescue animals have had at least one home and may have developed behavioral issues. Some of these issues may have been the reason the animal has been placed in the animal or rescue shelter. i.e. (aggressive behavior toward humans and other pets, excessive barking, destructive tendencies, inability to be house trained, etc.) Many have been separated from a loving environment by some ill fortune. The first thing that you need to consider is your time and home environment. Can you devote lots of patience and tender loving care, to get past the distress they may have experienced? If your time is limited, choose an animal that requires a small amount of exercise and that needs little grooming (for instance a short haired dog). If you are new to the pet area and have never owned a pet before do not choose a large animal or one with high energy level unless you are committed to a longer training period. Also, if you have children consider their ages when deciding on a pet. For instance, a large dog with aggressive tendencies may not be the right pet with small children. Always inquire if the kennel or shelter has any background or information on the animal. This will not always be available because a good deal of these pets will have been found wandering the streets cold, hungry and need of medical attention. Having said that owning pets is not just a privilege it's a huge responsibility. People and pets can make a great combination, but pet adoption brings big responsibilities along with the joy. If you are considering rescuing a pet and bringing them into your life, think seriously about the commitment that pet ownership requires. If you would like more information, click here

Triple D Dogs

Have you ever come back from a dinner, movie, or some other activity and found that your dog has been mischievous? Maybe you walked in and a pillow was torn up; a table leg had been chewed upon; or your perfectly house trained canine had left you a present or two. Did you draw a conclusion as to why it happened or simply chalk it up to a dog being a dog? Well, with that in mind let me toss a term I use sometimes for this behavior, "D-Day Dogs", dog, disconnection disorder. No, I’m not applying for a copy write on that term. So, use it at your own digression. Dogs are a very socio-grouping animal. If they do not exhibit confidence; appear to be unsure in certain situations; fall short of understanding of what is anticipated; or simply appear to be nervous in unfamiliar situations, it would be normal for them to be frustrated or nervous when you leave them alone for an extended period. These signs could stem from abuse, if you have adopted an older dog, isolation from others, or lack of proper training in the puppy stage. Think about your own behavior when you are waiting on a date or someone left without informing you of the details; you were nervous or anxious and your dog is demonstrates similar behaviors. So, now that we have identified possible causes of the issue, we can take steps to address it.
  • Confirm the dog’s position in your home life structure, their social position. Display dominance when you are leaving, remember a dog has a natural tendency to a structured social order.
  • Run or walk you dog prior to leaving. This is a good starting point because your four legged friend will be ready to relax when you get back home and leave.
  • Restrict your dog. (Kennel, porch, crate, etc..) This is not a punishment. Gradually familiarize your dog to a confined space. It will keep the animal from bad habits and will alleviate some of the stress. Make sure your crate has flooring, like the flooring BioLux international carries. Pet Grooming Supplies After the steps above, present the dog with a chew toy or raw hide when leaving and attempt to find the remains when you get home. This will eventually work as a trigger and they will become acclimated to your departure and return. Finally, try short period. Start the behavior modification by leaving for 1 minute, then 5, then 10, etc. As a socially structured animal, the dog wants security. Living in a pack and having a defined role provides the dog with security and when you leave, alpha dominant the dog loses some of that security and becomes anxious, developing bad habits. Your friend is not punishing you, nor is he/her a bad dog. It is a very natural response to insecurity. So, try these behavior modifications and if you have any suggestions that might help others,

    Choosing A Kennel Size

Dog's can be trained at any age to appreciate a crate as their place of sanctuary. Initially let her be curious of the crate without forcing it on here. Place the crate away from the wall so she can pace around it. Then prop the door open and she will probably investigate the crate by sniffing it. After the first night, start tossing a toy and/or treats and have here and have her jump in and out. Then in a couple of day, start feeding her meals in it. Next, if she has a blanket she lays on place it in the crate with a raw hide. Try making the crate a comfortable place; her special place. Next, start closing the door and keep door closed crating time short in the beginning. By placing the raw hide and blanket in the crate, she will associate the crate as a great place to retreat. You may notice her taking a new toy or a new chew bone into the crate and just feeling at ease.
A few side notes: Choose the appropriate size of crate. Ensure it has adequate ventilation. Take care that the dog kennel floor is a good quality floor for the health of her paws.
Always consult your pet professional for additional guidance before making any decisions. Good luck and let me know how things work out

Whitener Shampoo: Why is hair white?

The lack of melanin is the cause of white hair. Hence, no pigment is present in the of the hair. Wikipedia states, “In general, the more melanin present, the darker the hair color; the less melanin, the lighter the hair color” Just as every other animal, dog’s that have white hair also tend to be have thinner hair with color and often has less cuticle layers than hair with color. Which is the reason why it is more difficult to sustain a healthy bright coat with dogs that have all white or partially white hair? The white coat tends to retain dirt and other organic materials and because of the thinner nature of the hair; thus staining and a yellow tint is much more obvious. With that said, the next question is crystal clear. How does a professional dog groomer attack this issue? If you are at this point, you have heard comments from your customers or other groomers say something to the affect of: “The puppy’s (or dog’s), coat ends up looking yellow, dingy or dirty.” keep reading because this article is for you!

We are going to talk about how to keep the client happy and the dog’s coat white and their markings gleaming. The first task is to identify a quality product and I will confess that I am biased to BioLux Brightener / Whitener Dog Grooming Shampoo. That is not because I work her, but because it is not too harsh; it is all natural; I have seen the results and I tend to stick with things that work; but back to the topic at hand. The cleansing action of a quality shampoo for white coats is paramount. The more thoroughly it removes dirt and trash from the shaft of the hair, the more whitening becomes apparent. One caveat to understand is that most whitening shampoos are often more abrasive than standard dog grooming shampoos. Most of these shampoos contain a higher concentration of their chemical based ingredients. A great idea before purchasing or trying a new dog shampoo is to request the MSDS, which will inform you of potentially harmful chemicals the product may contain. Before we go to the next step, let’s dance and take one step back. Have your client pre brush the pooch before arriving. Many dog groomers shy away from this step, because they fear losing the client if they start performing grooming duties on their own. You can skip this step, however let me delineate why you should employ this action. First, assist them in choosing or selling them the correct type of brush for the task. In my opinion, the best brush to use is an open-spaced pin brush, and has them avoid brushes with balls on the pins. Having them do a quick brush before they arrive ensures they notice the before and after visual image of your job well done. Other benefits are:
    • A little of your time.
    • Staining is most likely to occur when substances are allowed to set in the coat.
    • Educating the client to remove any moisture on his legs avoid bacteria growth which spreads by scratching.
Next, ensure you use warm to mildly hot water. The higher temperature of the water raises the hair cuticle allowing the shampoo to be more effective. To “blue” or not to “blue”, that is the question. Some dog groomers use blueing in the dog's soap to the whiting effect. Blueing is used in human hair products to help maintain grey hair from turning yellow. The issue here is the amount to place in the shampoo or soap and all the bluing does is cover over the 'yellow'. What do you get when mixing blue and yellow? Yes, that is correct; eventually it will give the dog GREEN highlights. I refer to that as the blue hired ole’ lady effect. The 'yellow' is most likely from the water. Hard water or some with iron in it will do this. So, follow the hot water shampoo treatment with a cool rinse to calm and close the hair cuticle. In fact, the second rinse should be filtered water to avoid the “yellowing”. If you do not have access to filtered water, mix a table spoon of baking soda into a pale of water to shield the iron and other minerals out. Next, I do advise the application of a good dog grooming conditioner or crème rinse. Finally, set an appointment schedule on a regular interval. You client and their four legged friend will thank you for it. Thanks for asking..
